Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a medical-grade light-based treatment that has become one of the most effective treatments for evaporative dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and ocular rosacea.

Unlike a laser, IPL delivers carefully controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to the skin around the eyelids. These pulses target inflammation, abnormal blood vessels and other changes associated with meibomian gland dysfunction, helping to restore a healthier tear film.

IPL was originally developed in dermatology to treat conditions such as rosacea, sun damage and unwanted blood vessels. During treatment, clinicians noticed that many patients also experienced a significant improvement in dry eye symptoms. Since then, IPL has been extensively researched and is now widely used around the world as a treatment for evaporative dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction.

At The Dry Eye Suite, IPL is never offered as a one-size-fits-all treatment. Every patient first undergoes a comprehensive anterior eye assessment, including advanced meibomian gland imaging, to determine whether IPL is the most appropriate treatment for their condition.
