Anterior Eye
Assessment
A detailed 45-minute assessment of the front of the eye, designed to identify the underlying cause of dry eyes, watery eyes, red eyes, eyelid irritation, blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction and other ocular surface symptoms.
-
We begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, medications, contact lens wear, screen use, environmental factors and previous treatments. Understanding how and when your symptoms occur is an important part of identifying the underlying cause.
-
Using the Topcon TERA Dry Eye Platform we objectively assess the health and stability of your tear film, including:
Non-invasive Tear Break-Up Time (NITBUT)
Tear meniscus height (TMH)
Lipid layer assessment
Average blink rate and blink quality
Conjunctival redness analysis
These measurements help us understand how well your tear film is functioning before treatment is recommended.
-
Healthy meibomian glands are essential for a stable tear film.
Using infrared meibography we assess:
Meibomian gland structure
Gland loss (dropout)
Blepharitis
Eyelid margin health
Signs of blocked glands
Demodex (where present)
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
This helps determine whether evaporative dry eye is contributing to your symptoms.
-
When indicated, a Schirmer's test is performed to measure tear production.
This helps determine whether aqueous-deficient dry eye may be contributing to your symptoms and allows us to distinguish between different types of dry eye disease.
-
At the end of your appointment, we explain all of your findings in detail and review your imaging together.
Unlike a standard eye examination, our goal isn't simply to tell you that you have dry eye—it is to identify why you have dry eye.
Your treatment plan is tailored to your individual diagnosis and may include:
IPL
Meibomian gland expression
Blephasteam
ZEST
Punctal plugs
Lacrifill
Home care
Nutritional advice
Follow-up monitoring
Unlike a routine sight test, this assessment focuses specifically on the eyelids, tear film and ocular surface. We combine advanced imaging with a detailed clinical examination to determine what is causing your symptoms and which treatment options are most appropriate.
