IPL for Dry Eye Disease in Dublin

The Dry Eye Suite provides IPL treatment for dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and ocular rosacea in Dublin. Our specialist dry eye clinic is located within The Alex Clinic, 220 Harold's Cross Road, Dublin 6W. IPL treatment is performed following a comprehensive anterior eye assessment to determine whether it is suitable for your eyes.

What Is IPL treatment for dry eye?

If you've been struggling with dry, irritated, watery or burning eyes despite using eye drops, the problem may not be that you're producing too few tears. In many cases, your tears are evaporating too quickly because the tiny oil-producing glands in your eyelids—the meibomian glands—are not functioning properly.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is one of the most effective evidence-based treatments for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), evaporative dry eye disease and ocular rosacea. Rather than simply masking symptoms, IPL works by reducing inflammation and improving the function of the meibomian glands, helping to restore a healthier and more stable tear film.

At The Dry Eye Suite, every IPL treatment begins with a Comprehensive Anterior Eye Assessment to ensure that IPL is appropriate for your condition and that your treatment plan is tailored specifically to your eyes.

IPL Dry Eye Treatment at The Dry Eye Suite Dublin

Not all IPL treatments for dry eye are the same.

Every patient benefits from:

  • A Comprehensive Anterior Eye Assessment before treatment

  • Advanced Meibography to assess the health of your meibomian glands

  • Treatment performed by an optometrist with a specialist interest in dry eye disease

  • Treatment of both the upper and lower eyelids where appropriate

  • Use of intraocular shields to allow treatment closer to the meibomian glands

  • Manual Meibomian Gland Expression immediately after every IPL treatment

  • A personalised treatment plan based on your clinical findings rather than a one-size-fits-all approach

Our aim isn't simply to make your eyes feel better for a short period of time—we aim to improve the health and function of your meibomian glands for longer-lasting relief.

Who May Benefit From IPL for Dry Eye?

IPL may be considered for patients whose symptoms are associated with meibomian gland dysfunction, evaporative dry eye disease or ocular rosacea.

Symptoms may include:

  • Burning or stinging eyes

  • Watery eyes

  • Red or irritated eyes

  • Gritty or sandy sensations

  • Fluctuating or blurred vision

  • Eyelid inflammation

  • Recurrent symptoms despite using lubricating eye drops

Not every patient with dry eye is suitable for IPL. This is why treatment at The Dry Eye Suite begins with a comprehensive anterior eye assessment to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms.

How Does IPL Work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a medical-grade light treatment that has become one of the most effective treatments for evaporative dry eye disease.

Unlike a laser, IPL delivers carefully controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to the skin around the eyelids.

These pulses reduce inflammation, target abnormal blood vessels associated with ocular rosacea and improve the function of the meibomian glands, helping to restore a healthier tear film.

IPL was originally developed in dermatology to treat rosacea and vascular skin conditions. Clinicians soon noticed that patients also experienced significant improvements in dry eye symptoms. Since then, IPL has been extensively researched and is now recognised worldwide as an effective treatment for evaporative dry eye caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

We Treat Both the Upper and Lower Eyelids

This is one of the features that sets our IPL protocol apart.

Many IPL providers only treat beneath the lower eyelids because they use external protective goggles.

However, the upper eyelids actually contain more meibomian glands than the lower lids, and these glands are generally longer and contribute significantly to the protective oil layer of your tears.

At The Dry Eye Suite, we routinely offer treatment of both the upper and lower eyelids using medical-grade intraocular shields, where appropriate.

After anaesthetic eye drops have been applied, these specially designed shields protect the eye while allowing treatment much closer to the meibomian glands than is possible with external goggles alone.

This enables us to treat a greater number of glands and provide a more comprehensive treatment.

For patients who would prefer not to have intraocular shields, IPL can also be safely performed using external protective goggles, and we'll discuss the most appropriate option during your consultation.

Why Meibomian Gland Expression Matters

IPL is only one part of successful treatment.

One of the most important steps is Manual Meibomian Gland Expression, which we perform immediately after every IPL session.

The gentle heat generated during IPL softens thickened oils within the glands. Expressing the glands while these oils are softened helps remove blockages and allows healthier oil to flow more freely onto the surface of the eye.

This combination of IPL followed by gland expression helps maximise the effectiveness of treatment and supports healthier gland function.

How IPL Helps Dry Eye Disease

Reduces Inflammation

Inflammation plays a major role in dry eye disease, particularly Ocular Rosacea and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

IPL helps reduce chronic inflammation around the eyelids, creating a healthier environment for the meibomian glands to function.

Many patients notice improvements in burning, irritation, redness and fluctuating vision.

Restores Meibomian Gland Function

Healthy meibomian glands produce the oil layer that prevents tears from evaporating too quickly.

When these glands become blocked or inflamed, the tear film becomes unstable.

IPL helps restore healthier gland function, while Manual Meibomian Gland Expression removes softened blockages to improve oil flow.

Improves Tear Film Stability

By improving the quality of the oil produced by the meibomian glands, IPL helps reduce tear evaporation and stabilise the tear film.

A healthier tear film means greater comfort, clearer vision and improved protection of the ocular surface.

Reduces Abnormal Blood Vessels

Patients with Ocular Rosacea often develop abnormal blood vessels around the eyelids.

These vessels release inflammatory chemicals that contribute to chronic dry eye disease.

IPL selectively targets these vessels, helping to reduce inflammation and break this cycle.
