Non-Surgical Stye & Chalazion Treatment

Can IPL Treat an Existing Stye or Chalazion?

Unlike IPL treatment for dry eye disease, treatment for styes and chalazia is performed as a targeted spot treatment over the affected eyelid.

The aim is to reduce inflammation around the blocked gland and encourage the normal drainage of its contents.

Where appropriate, gentle meibomian gland expression may also be performed to help release thickened oils and improve gland function.

Early treatment often offers the greatest chance of success.

A Non-Surgical Alternative

Many chalazia eventually require surgical removal (incision and curettage), particularly if they have been present for several months.

However, for suitable patients, IPL provides a minimally invasive alternative that may help the lesion resolve without surgery.

Because there are no incisions, stitches or dressings, there is very little downtime, allowing you to return to your normal activities immediately after treatment.

Many patients choose to try IPL before considering referral for surgical removal.

Ideal Before an Important Event

A noticeable eyelid lump can be frustrating, particularly if you have an important occasion such as a wedding, family event or holiday approaching.

Treating a stye or early chalazion promptly may help reduce inflammation and encourage faster resolution, while avoiding the recovery period associated with surgery.

Although every case responds differently, early treatment often provides the best opportunity for improvement.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Treatment is tailored to each individual.

Some patients experience significant improvement after two treatments, while others require up to four sessions, depending on:

  • The size of the lesion

  • Whether it is a stye or chalazion

  • How long it has been present

  • The health of your meibomian glands

  • Your response to treatment

Do I Need a Full Dry Eye Assessment?

No.

If you are attending specifically for IPL treatment of a stye or chalazion, a full Comprehensive Anterior Eye Assessment is not required.

Instead, your appointment will include a focused examination of the affected eyelid to confirm that the lesion is suitable for IPL treatment and to ensure there are no features suggesting an alternative diagnosis.

If recurrent styes or chalazia are a problem, a more comprehensive dry eye assessment may be recommended at a later stage to investigate underlying conditions such as meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis or ocular rosacea.

“I recently started a course of IPL treatment with Nicola for a chronic dry eye condition, and I've already noticed an improvement after just one session. The whole experience was very professional and reassuring from start to finish. Nicola was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional, taking time to explain everything clearly and making the whole process very comfortable. I’m really happy I decided to start treatment here and would definitely recommend the clinic to anyone struggling with dry eye issues.”
